NEW GLARUS - New Glarus sophomore Ryan McCoy doesn't need a GPS or road map to find his way around the Edelweiss Country Club.
McCoy finished second overall at the Capitol Conference meet Saturday and the Knights had three of the top 13 runners to repeat as the overall and South champions.
"It felt good running my home course," McCoy said. "We definitely wanted to win both the North and South. We were capable of winning it. We ran as well as we could."
New Glarus-Monticello ran away with the title 23-50 over runner-up Marshall in a conference meet that featured both the Capitol North and South schools.
New Glarus-Monticello sophomore Alexander Yeiser finished 12th (17:31) and senior Reid Zanoya took 13th (17:33).
"We felt like we were competitive in the Capitol South," New Glarus-Monticello coach Steve Wehrley said. "We thought it would be exciting to say we were conference champions without having to say South. It's the high point."
Junior Evan Schultz took 20th (17:53) and freshman Young Chul Vetterlie was 23rd (17:56).
McCoy enjoyed having a home course advantage.
"We had a lot of people here from our town and school," McCoy said. "It's nice. I think our team did amazing. Our depth is great. We all ran really good times today."
Wehrley said that McCoy is starting to peak.
"I'm really happy with the way he is running," Wehrley said of McCoy said. "He's healthy. He's smiling when he is running and I'm smiling when he's finished."
