MONROE - The scoring drought for the Monroe girls soccer team continued in a 2-0 loss to Reedsburg in a non-conference game Friday, May 17 at Honey Creek Park.
It's the fifth time the Cheesemakers have been shut out this season and the third time in the last four games. In the last four and a half games, Monroe (1-7-2, 1-4-1 Badger South) has been limited to just one goal. It was mixed emotions on Senior Night for Monroe senior Jessica Bell.
"It's pretty bittersweet," she said. "I love playing soccer. To know it's my last game on this field is a little saddening. It's not the result we wanted. It felt good to get out there and compete."
Reedsburg junior midfielder Kate Fearing scored two goals to propel the Beavers to the win. The Cheesemakers are averaging just one goal per game this year. Both the Cheesemakers and Beavers each had 15 shots on goal. Bell understands the passing and finishing at the net need to be stronger.
"It's a lot of finishing," she said. "We were there. We were just getting shots off the goalie's hands. We need to make shorter passes. The shorter passes will always be more accurate. Maddie (Kallgren) and Gabby (Ludwig) are great forwards. I think they are going to get more goals before the season is over."
Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill admitted the pressure may be getting to the Cheesemakers.
"I think they made a lot of good runs," O'Neill said. "I think their composure in the box is something we have to work on. I think they feel under so much pressure to get a shot off when they get in there. It's all psychological really."
Monroe sophomore goalkeeper Gwendolyn Ambrose had 10 saves.
"(Ambrose) had a fantastic game," O'Neill said. "She really made some key saves in the second half."
Kallgren, a freshman, just missed a goal in the 33rd minute. Fearing gave the Beavers a 1-0 first half lead when she slipped a shot past Ambrose. Fearing scored her second goal at 44:27 seconds to give the Beavers all the offense they would need.
"I think we had a hard time with their speed and depth," O'Neill said. "It makes a difference when you can put a player in that is just as good as the player you are taking out."
Monroe will play at Mount Horeb today and will find out what regional seed they receive this weekend.
"You have to hope when the regional comes everyone steps up a little bit more," O'Neill said.
