CAMBRIDGE - Both the Sugar River boys and girls track teams continued an their dominance in the Capitol South Conference.
The Sugar River boys outdistanced Marshall 122-97.5 for their 12th straight Capitol South Conference championship. The Sugar River girls ran away with their eighth consecutive conference title in a landslide 156-81 over Wisconsin Heights.
Sugar River junior Victoria Ortgiesen won three individual conference titles including the 100-meter hurdles (:16.75), the 300 hurdles (:47.40) and the 200 (:27.27). Senior Jessica Putland won the shot put (34 feet, 1 inch) and the discus (115-2).
Senior Ashley Brusveen won the high jump (5-0) and Emily Diaz took first in the 100 (:12.98).
The Raiders' 3,200 relay team including Emily DeNure, Katie Schmitz, Madeline Brunner and Jamie Brown took first with a time of 10:26.41. The Raiders' 800 relay team including Savanna Atkins, Harley Hollis, Megan Neperud and Quinn Rear won with a time of 1:54.31, which was less than one minute ahead of Cambridge.
In the boys meet, senior Dennis Haak finished first in the 800 (2:07.48) and the 3,200 (10:27.20). Sugar River's Garrison Woods won the long jump (20-5) and the triple jump (42-9 3/4).
Sophomore Ryan McCoy finished first in the 1,600 (4:32.11) and Jon Beckman won the 110 hurdles (:15.24). Sugar River's Wesley Morgan won the pole vault (11-6).
Morgan teamed with Young-Chul Vetterli, Alexander Yeiser and Riley Miller to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:03.46. Morgan and McCoy teamed with Max Eggenberger and Josh Stern to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:42.50, about four seconds ahead of Marshall.
The Raiders' 800 relay team including Kirbe French, Cody Bigler, Eggenberger and Justin Stadelman took first, with a time of 1:38.17.
SWAL Conference Meet
MUSCODA - It was a great day for the Darlington boys and girls track and field teams Tuesday at the SWAL Conference meet at Riverdale. Both teams captured the conference meet, with 168 points, and crowned a combined eight individual conference champions and three relay team conference champions.
In the boys meet, Darlington was nearly unstoppable, placing first and second in four distance events. Senior Alex Erickson took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.05 seconds and won the high jump (5-10). The 800 meters belonged to senior Connor Roche with a time of 2:08.04. Freshman Tyson Miehe breezed through the 1600 meters in 4:38.35 and set a new conference meet record in the 3200 meters in 9:55.67. The Redbirds 3200 meter relay team of Kent Miehe, Roche, Destin Komprood, and Brady McDaniel became conference champions with a first-place time of 8:37.82
Junior Amy Jorgenson led the Redbirds' girls team with a first-place finish in the 1600 meter run (5:36.08) and 3200 meter run (12:34.55). Junior Haily McGowan took the conference championship in the discus with a throw of 101 feet, eight inches. The Redbirds went home with two conference champion relay teams. the 1600 meter relay team of Chayse Hermanson, Kayla Lange, Claire Scott, and Hannah Huffman handled the track in 4:17.06 and the 3200 meter relay team of Shawni Smith, Alison Wedig, Cheyenne Wolfe, and Claire Cullen finished first with a time of 10:35.41.
Darlington will host the boys and girls Division 3 regional Monday.
