HAZEL GREEN - The Darlington girls basketball team shook off the first game jitters and came back to beat Southwestern 67-51 Friday.
The Redbirds trailed 33-29 at halftime after racking up 15 fouls.
"It was the first game and we played like it," Darlington coach Mike Chambers said. "We grew up in a hurry in the second half."
Southwestern's Katelyn Hoppman scored 21 points in the first half for the Wildcats.
Darlington senior Amy Jorgenson scored 21 points and junior Cassidy Chambers had 19. Fellow junior Claire Scott added 18.
The Redbirds outscored the Wildcats 19-7 in the third quarter. Darlington committed just seven fouls in the second half.
"That was a big difference keeping them off the free throw line," Chambers said.
Highland 50, Pecatonica 47
BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica junior Michelle Francois missed a 3-pointer with about one second left that could have sent the game to overtime, but the Vikings lost a nailbiter to Highland.
Pecatonica coach Matt Bakkum went into a game against Highland Friday night looking to shut down Leigh Drury and Taylor Wienkes.
"We wanted to stop those top two scorers," Bakkum said. "Sometimes you have a third player step up."
Highland's Amber Yager scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Cardinals. Drury scored 16 points and Wienkes added 13.
"She (Yager) was definitely the difference, no question," Bakkum said. "We are on a learning curve and we will get on a roll."
Francois scored a team-high 13 points for the Vikings, including hitting a shot with about 20 seconds left to cut the Cardinals' lead to one.
Pecatonica juniors Emily Fargo and Emma Marion each added 10.
Black Hawk 40, River Ridge 22
RIVER RIDGE - In a showdown between two of the Division 5 state teams last year, Black Hawk rolled in an early season test.
Black Hawk led just 15-11 at halftime, but the Warriors picked up the defense. The Warriors outscored the Timberwolves 25-11 in the second half.
Black Hawk sophomore Jen Wellnitz scored a team-high 12 points and senior Kate Quinn had 11. Fellow senior Katie Powers added eight.
