DARLINGTON - The Darlington football team may earn the nickname "The Cardiac Redbirds" after coming from behind three times Thursday before falling in a shootout 34-30 to Mineral Point.

Darlington sophomore Alex Erickson had 287 total yards (142 rushing) and scored three touchdowns to help the Redbirds rally from a 21-10 second-half deficit.

Erickson, who completed 9 of 22 passes for 145 yards, tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Trynton Schwartz to cut Mineral Point's lead to 21-16 with 5:27 to go in the third quarter.

Erickson broke loose for a 42-yard run to give the Redbirds a 22-21 lead.

Erickson again connected with Schwartz on a go-ahead 35-yard scoring pass to Schwartz. A two-point conversion pass from Erickson to senior Jeff Reichling gave Darlington (5-4, 4-3 SWAL) a 30-27 lead with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter, but the Redbirds couldn't hold the lead.

Mineral Point's Jordan Tibbits, who rushed for 160 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns, scored the game-winning touchdown on a 9-yard run with 7:23 left.

Reichling rushed for 88 yards on 20 carries, a touchdown and also booted a 28-yard field goal.
