Redbirds take over first

DARLINGTON - Junior Kaylee Meyers scored a game-high 16 points to propel the Darlington girls basketball team to a 57-44 win over Cuba City Friday.

With the win, Darlington (15-4, 11-1 SWAL) takes over sole possession of first place in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League. The Redbirds jumped out to a 26-19 lead at the half and were able to hang on to the win. Darlington has a half-game lead in the league over Cuba City (15-6, 11-2) and Mineral Point (16-5, 11-2) with two conference games left - a makeup at Boscobel on Tuesday, and the final regular season game at Iowa-Grant Thursday.

Darlington rolled to a 79-53 win over Boscobel (14-5, 7-5) in the first meeting. In the first game this season against Iowa-Grant (4-15, 2-10), the Redbirds cruised to a 71-27 victory.

Darlington's Brenna McDonald added 10 points. Seniors Meghan Douglas and Chelsie Golackson each chipped in 8. Meyers knocked down two of the Redbirds' five 3-pointers.

Darlington has won seven straight games since losing on the road to Cuba City 58-53 Jan. 9.

Cuba City's Elizabeth Misky scored a team-high 14 points and Kiera Holzemer added 13.

Cuba City and Mineral Point play Thursday. The Pointers defeated the Cubans 58-41 Jan. 12. Cuba City is 5-4 in its past nine games.
