Redbirds stay unbeaten

DARLINGTON - Senior Cole McDonald and sophomore Hunter Johnson each scored a team-high 17 points and the Redbirds used some defensive pressure to roll to a 62-48 win over Pecatonica Tuesday.

Darlington (8-0, 3-0 SWAL) looked to be in control until the Vikings went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter. Pecatonica sophomore A.J. Hendrickson drilled a 3-pointer to cut the Redbirds' lead to 32-29. The Redbirds responded and took a 48-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Vikings cut the Redbirds' lead to one point early in the fourth quarter. The Redbirds answered with a 12-2 run to seal the win. The Redbirds were aggressive attacking the basket in the second half. Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said the Redbirds have shot about 94 more free throws than opponents going into the game.

"We only had one free throw in the first half, but 13 of our free throws we shot in the second half," Hopkins said. "We attacked the basket in the second half and we stepped up our defense."

Darlington senior Ben Muhlstein added 11 points and sophomore teammate Will Schwartz scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

"Will Schwartz scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter," Hopkins said. "We inserted him into the lineup due to foul trouble and he stepped up for us."

Hendrickson scored a game-high 23 points for the Vikings. Pecatonica junior Brooks Chandler added 13 points.

With the loss, Pecatonica drops to 6-3, 3-0 Six Rivers East. The Vikings have now lost two straight games.



Belmont 53, Juda 39

BELMONT - Raine Voigts scored a team-high 17 points to lead a balanced attack to beat Juda in a non-conference game 53-39.

Juda (3-6, 1-1 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a three-point lead in the first quarter. The Braves outscored the Panthers 13-8 in the second quarter to take a two-point lead at the half. The Braves went on an 18-9 run in the third quarter to seal the win.

"It's been the story for us all season," Juda coach James Pickett said. "We play three decent quarters. They picked up their defensive intensity in the third quarter and we had some turnovers that compounded it. When they went on that run our body language just changed."

Juda sophomore Matt Schmitt scored a game-high 19 points and Skylar Stuckey added nine points.



MSL 55, Monticello 41

CAMBRIDGE - The Monticello boys basketball team lost its seventh straight game as the Milwaukee School of Languages knocked off the Ponies 55-41.

The Milwaukee School of Languages jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Monticello (1-8, 0-3 Six Rivers East) then closed the first quarter with an 11-0 run to take a three-point lead.

The Milwaukee School of Languages outscored the Ponies 13-5 in the second quarter to take a 21-16 lead at the half.

Monticello senior Ben May scored a game-high 20 points and drilled four 3-pointers.



Platteville 50, Black Hawk 37

MINERAL POINT - Jason Withrow scored a game-high 13 points to lift Platteville to a 50-37 win over Black Hawk in the Mineral Point Holiday Tournament.

The Hillmen led by seven points at the half. Platteville led 39-32 to start the fourth quarter. The Hillmen outscored the Warriors 11-5 in the fourth quarter.

Black Hawk senior Heath Butler scored a team-high nine points. Senior Blaine Wolff and senior Shawn Woodruff each chipped in seven points. With the loss, Black Hawk drops to 3-4, 2-0 Six Rivers East.
