DARLINGTON - The Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team used a home course advantage to roll to a dual meet sweep of Prairie du Chien and Southwestern Monday.
The Redbirds had two golfers turn in season best rounds en route to shooting a 199, which was 28 strokes ahead of Prairie du Chien and 72 ahead of Southwestern at the Darlington Country Club.
Darlington senior Nellie Black shot a 9-over 44 to take medalist honors. Darlington junior Shelby Poss shot a season best 47 and Cuba City's Kayla Paquette shot a season best 53 to lead the Redbirds.
Darlington senior Erica McComish and sophomore Naomi Black each carded a 55.
"We broke 200. That's kind of our goal," Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen said. "They all competed. They will improve on that."
Nellie Black pared No. 1 and No. 7. After tying the school record with a 38 in her first match, Nellie Black has raised expectations.
"She set it really high," Ringen said of her top score. "It will be hard to come back and match that."
Ringen said Nellie Black was hitting the driver off to the right and set it under the tree line on several holes.
"She will get that straightened out and get it back in the fairway," he said. "She will keep taking strokes off."
Poss, who shot a 46 on the front nine at the Prairie du Chien Invite Aug. 20, has now had two consistent matches.
"She was playing really relaxed today," Ringen said. "She was hitting the ball very good."
Ringen said every player still has to work on their putting.
"Our greens are notoriously slow compared to the other courses we play on," he said. "That's the nature of the game. You have to adjust."
The Redbirds finished third at the nine-team Prairie du Chien Invitational Aug. 20. Onalaska won the title followed by Lancastser. The Redbirds shot seven strokes better than last year when they took second. However, Lancaster wasn't at the invite last year.
"Onalaska is one of the premier Division 1 programs," Ringen said. "They are right up there with Middleton."
Nellie Black finished seventh overall with a 90. A hot and humid day did affect some of the golfers. Nellie's sister, Naomi Black shot a 100. Poss shot a 46 on the front nine and finished with a 105 after a back nine where she shot 59.
McComish shot a 116 and Paquette carded a 124.
"It (the humidity) really took its toll on some of the girls," he said. "That's just part of it."
Darlington-Cuba City will play its next match at the Westby Invitational Friday at the Viroqua Hills Country Club.
