PLATTEVILLE - The Darlington boys cross country team proved they were the class of the Platteville Invitational running to the championship Saturday.
The Redbirds had four runners in the top 10 en route to running to the small school title 37-65 over Albany. New Glarus-Monticello finished fourth (146). Pecatonica-Argyle took last (360) in the 12-team invite. Darlington senior Jaden Komprood won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 38.3 seconds. Senior teammate Sean Barbee finished sixth (17:32.2), sophomore Tanner Evenstad took seventh (17:39) and senior Blake Cwynar was ninth (17:44.2). Junior teammate Conner Hackett took 14th (18:19.7).
Albany had three runners crack the top 10 led by senior Tyler Dahl who finished fifth (17:32). Tyler's brother, Josh Dahl, took eighth (17:42.1) and senior Josh Little was 10th (18:04.8).
"We are not concerned with beating Darlington," Albany coach Tony Brewer said.
Brewer is looking forward to the conference and sectional meets.
"We found out Lancaster is pretty good," he said. "We were only five points ahead of them. We can't have four or five Darlington runners finish ahead of our No. 1 guy. With Dakota Kauffman of Boscobel probably winning the sectional we know they only have to score four runners."
Albany junior Isaac Halverson finished 15th (18:22.2) and junior Connor Trow was 27th (18:58.2) to round out the top five for the Comets.
"Josh Little knows he needs to be running up there with Tyler and Josh (Dahl)," Brewer said. "Isaac Halverson needs to be up there with our top three."
New Glarus-Monticello junior Kyle Fredrickson finished 11th (18:07.6) to lead the Glarner Knights. Senior teammate Max Cruse took 21st (18:44.5) and junior Christian Arnett took 23rd (18:50.7). Senior teammate Ben Jackson took 45th (20:13.2) and junior Andrew Newberry was 46th (20:13.9).
Pecatonica-Argyle junior Joey Boland finished 66th (21.58.7) and junior Caleb Carr (22:00) took 69th to lead the Vikings. Senior teammate Login Swearingen finished 71st (22:25.3) followed by junior Dakota Kauffman in 76th (22:51.7) and freshman Cade Bush in 78th (24:06.4).
In the small schools girls race, Lancaster captured the title 55-72 over Albany and Darlington took third (99). New Glarus-Monticello finished sixth (150). Belleville junior Noelle Marie won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 19:04.7.
"We were hoping to run with them," Brewer said of Lancaster. "At the 1 3/4 mile, I think we were ahead of them. They took it to us that last mile. We have to be better that last mile."
Albany junior Ciara Kaderly took third (19:49.7) to lead the Comets and New Glarus-Monticello freshman Gabbie Sawyer took sixth (21:45.2). Albany freshman Kirsten Oliver finished fifth (21:33) and senior Emily Hauri was 15th (22:14.8). Freshman teammate Megan Anderson took 20th (22:21.7) and sophomore Madeline Halverson was 29th (23:20.1). The Comets held out sophomore Emma Guenther and senior Sydnee Woyak is still out with a stress fracture.
"I think Emily ran really good," Brewer said. "I think she is getting better and more confident."
It's still unknown if Woyak can return for the conference meet in two weeks.
"Our main focus is to get her ready for sectionals," Brewer said.
Darlington sophomore Reghan Komprood ran to a 10th-place finish (21:49.4) and sophomore teammate Emma Crist took 16th (22:15.7). Darlington junior Paige Schilling finished 21st (22:32.7) and the Redbirds had two freshmen in their top five. Freshman Kaylee Meyers took 24th (22:42.1) and freshman Ilse Mendez was 28th (23:11.1).
New Glarus-Monticello senior Ashley Risley took 22nd (22:34.5) and senior Jane Thurow was 32nd (23:44.7). Junior teammate Rebecca Barr took 44th (24:54.2) and junior Kelly Fredrickson finished 46th (25:19.5). Pecatonica-Argyle junior Josie Penniston finished 67th (22:50.9) to lead the Vikings.
In the large school race, McFarland took the team title 47-106 over Dodgeville-Mineral Point. Brodhead-Juda finished sixth (132) out of 10 teams. Brodhead-Juda senior Taylor Bluemel finished second (20:14) and sophomore Madee Harding took eighth (20:52.4). Sophomore teammate Cora Purdue took 19th (21:46.8) and senior Danielle Dieckhoff was 50th (23:41). Sophomore Morgan Tresemer rounded out the top five for the Cardinals taking 53rd (23:56.6).
McFarland also won the team title in the large schools boys division, 43-74 over Madison Edgewood. Brodhead-Juda finished ninth (226) out of 12 teams.
Brodhead-Juda junior Reuben Larson paced the Cardinals finishing 30th (18:22.9). Senior teammate Peter Speckman took 33rd (18:28.5) and junior Tyler Urness took 49th (19:08.4). Junior Blake Burns took 53rd (19:21.4) and junior Nate Ciabatti was 61st (19:31.2).
Monroe, Brodhead-Juda, Pecatonica-Argyle, New Glarus-Monticello and Belleville will run in the Baertschi Invitational Saturday in Albany. It will be the final regular season meet before conference and sectional meets.
Darlington will compete in the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational Saturday. Darlington will host the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League meet at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 15. The Redbirds will be the favorite to win an eighth straight conference title.
