Redbirds ready to tee off on season

DARLINGTON - With four varsity golfers returning from last season, the Darlington golf team is banking on that experience paying dividends this season.

"One of our strengths is the fact that we are returning four from our varsity team last year," said Darlington coach Dave Jacobson. "We also have two other returners that played every JV match, so we have some decent experience."

Seniors Alex Schulte, Chase Tuescher, and Andrew Jacobson, as well as junior A.J Brandt return on varsity for the Redbirds this season. The Redbirds graduated just one golfer last year, sectional-qualifier Zach McArthur. Schulte averaged a 41 last season, and he is expected to be the Redbirds top scorer this year.

"I would expect our top performer to be Alex," Jacobson said. "He's our captain this year."

One area Jacobson believes his team needs to see some improvement is in their short game.

"We need to work on our short game; scrambling, getting up and down," he said. "Of course it doesn't help when you can't get outside, but it's the same for everyone."

Last season, the Redbirds finished in third place in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League, finishing just one point behind Southwestern and 16 points behind Cuba City. Jacobson said he believes his team has a shot at a conference title in the up-for-grabs SWAL.

"I expect us to have a decent year," he said. "We lost out top golfer, but I think it's a wide-open conference. I think there are at least four teams that have a legitimate shot."
