DARLINGTON - The Darlington football team kicked off a fundraiser to add lights to Martens Field.

The Darlington School District announced a fundraiser Friday called, "Wadzy's Watts" to raise $150,000 for the construction of lights at Walter "Wadzy" Martens Field. If the fundraiser is successful, Darlington could play under the lights in 2015.

Tom Martens, the son of former Darlington coach Walter Martens for its first 35 years (1926-1960), donated $50,000 to the Darlington Touchdown Club in a halftime announcement Friday during the Redbirds' 48-0 win over Riverdale.

"Afternoon football has been a tradition in Darlington," Martens said. "It's no secret that my dad felt strongly that games should be played in the afternoon. The time has come to light Martens Field."

Darlington High School Principal and former football coach Doug McArthur, said it will cost the district about $150,000 for the school to add lights to Martens Field.

The school brought in portable lights for a homecoming game last fall as a test.

The Chieftains were no test for the Redbirds. Darlington (8-1), ranked No. 5 in the WisSports.net Coaches poll, erupted for 20 points in the second quarter. Darlington senior fullback Myles Leahy rushed for 143 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Cole McDonald tossed two touchdown passes in the second quarter to spark the Redbirds.
