DARLINGTON - When a basketball team goes through a six minute scoring drought in the third quarter, like the Darlington boys did Tuesday night, Redbirds coach Mike Hopkins saw a silver lining.
"It certainly wasn't planned for," Hopkins said of the cold spell. "I told them at the end of the quarter that we had a bad quarter, but we had a one point lead. We picked up our defense and we got our offense in gear."
Darlington (11-0, 6-0 SWAL), ranked sixth in the Associated Press Division 3 poll, outscored Fennimore 22-4 in the fourth quarter and steamrolled to a 63-43 win over Fennimore.
The Redbirds had a balanced scoring attack. Darlington junior Alex Erickson scored a game-high 20 points. Senior Tanner Havens scored 14 points and junior Tucker Wiegel had 10. Darlington received a big boost off the bench as the Redbirds outscored the Eagles 15-0. Junior Zach Brown scored all nine of his points off the bench in the fourth quarter to spark the Redbirds.
Darlington prepares for an unbeaten SWAL showdown at Cuba City Friday night.
"It will be a hard ticket to get," Hopkins said.
