DARLINGTON - It didn't take long for Nellie Black and the Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team to find their stroke again.

Nellie Black tied a school record by shooting the lowest score with a 4-over-par 38 to lead the Redbirds to a season-opening 198-266 win over Lena-Winslow Monday at the Darlington Country Club.

"She is really concentrating," Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen said. "She is really dedicating herself to the season. It will be just as exciting to see what she can do with the rest of the season. I'm sure she is intent on owning the record by herself."

Darlington junior Shelby Poss finished with a 49 and Naomi Black, Nellie's sister, carded a 50. Kayla Braley rounded out the top four with a 61.

Poss could have shot even better if it weren't for a two stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball out of the rough on No. 9.

"She played really good golf," Ringen said.

The Redbirds best nine hole match last season was a 183. However, the Redbirds did shoot a 169 on the back nine at the conference tournament at Lancaster last year.

"It's a good start," Ringen said of the Redbirds' 198. "Our goal is to score under 200 in our matches. We are looking forward to lowering that even more."

The Redbirds played without senior Erica McComish who was at a doctor appointment Monday. Darlington-Cuba City will host Mount Horeb at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

"We are looking forward to her coming back on Thursday," Ringen said.
