BELLEVILLE - Saturday went well for area boys cross country teams. Darlington and Albany not only had the top two individual finishers, but both advanced to next week's state finals in Wisconsin Rapids. Pecatonica-Argyle, the third area team at the Division 3 Belleville sectional, was awfully happy to finish 11th.
"This is the first time we've even had enough runners to get a team score," Pec-Argyle coach Pat Hardyman said. "Last year we had, I think, three guys. So I'm very pleased."
Albany's Jake Lincicum won the race with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds.
"We got second," Comets coach Tony Brewer said. "That was our goal since last year. We had six of seven guys coming back and we've accomplished a lot this year. You hate to say it comes down to one race, but it does for this team."
Albany held off Brookwood by just seven seconds and two points (76-78), and any other change in place may have resulted in a lost opportunity for the Comets. Jake Short helped the team with a sixth-place finish (18:29), Drew Mather came in 11th (18:47), Reese Whitehead came in 26th (19:11) and Tyler Conley finished off the team's scoring, finishing 32nd at 19:34.
Darlington's Jordan Heinberg finished second to Lincicum with a time of 17:36. Darlington finished with 52 points, blowing away the competition and advancing as a team to state. Michael Sinclair came in eighth at 18:32 for the Redbirds. Kent Miehe (18:50), Connor Roche (18:52) and Markus Garrison (18:54) finished 13-14-15 to lock up the low scoring.
"We did good. We know that someone will come through," Redbirds coach Arnie Miehe said.
The Vikings, who gathered 265 points, were led by Chris James, who finished 16th with a time of 18:55.
"Chris ran a very good race. He wanted to finish in the top five individuals, but I'm very happy with the way he ran," Hardyman said. "We've got a really good group coming back. Three freshmen, two sophomores - for most of them this was their first sectional meet. I think next year there are some big expectations."
For Darlington and Albany, the season continues for one more week.
"When you go to state, anything is possible. Strange things happen at state," Miehe said. "As long as you're healthy and you have the right frame of mind, you can have a great race."
The Comets hope to get a fabulous run from Lincicum.
"He wants to win," Brewer said. "We wanted him to conserve a lot today, but we knew Heinberg's good. But we knew he had to get that No. 1 spot in order for us to finish second today."
The boys race will take place at 11 a.m. at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids Saturday, Nov. 1.
