DARLINGTON - The Darlington girls basketball team spent their Thursday practice working on defense. The hard work payed off for the Redbirds, as they held Iowa-Grant to just 15 points Friday night on their way to a 35-15 victory.
"We worked on defense all day yesterday," said Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons. "Just working on help defense, helping against dribble penetration. Our help defense tonight was exactly what I wanted."
Darlington was led in scoring by a pair of seniors. Claire Scott had 12 points, while Cassidy Chambers added 11. Fitzsimons said he was particularly happy with the play of Scott.
"Claire Scott had a very good game," he said. "She had a lot of rebounds. I don't know the exact number, but I wouldn't be surprised if she had a double-double."
Darlington continued their hot start to the season with the win. The Redbirds are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.
New Glarus 68, Lake Mills 63
LAKE MILLS - Four New Glarus players scored in double digits to lead the Glarner Knights to a high-scoring win over Lake Mills. New Glarus knocked off the L-Cats, 68-63.
New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said the key to her team's victory was that the Glarner Knights played well together.
"They pressed us a lot, which is what other teams have been doing to us," Scheele said. "We played well and we played together. We stayed together and came out on top."
Another key for New Glarus was getting to the free throw line.
"We got to the free throw line a lot," Scheele said. "We took 41 free throw attempts. They were working togther and moving the ball. We had it coming from all over."
Lexi Hanson led New Glarus with 16 points. Sierra Watrud and Cassie Feller each added 14 for the Glarner Knights, while Mandi Sargent contributed 10.
New Glarus improved to 3-4 with the win. The victory also snapped a three-game losing streak for the Glarner Knights. Scheele said it was nice to pick up the win.
The Knights will play at Waterloo Dec. 20.
"We got over that hump of getting pressed and finally finishing," she said. "It was nice for them to get that win."
