WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Both the Darlington boys and girls cross country teams won championships in the Division 2-3 races at the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational on Saturday.

The Darlington boys, ranked No. 1 in the Division 3 Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association state poll, ran against Stevens Point, which is ranked No. 1 in Division 1, Oshkosh West, ranked No. 8 and Waukesha South. Stevens Point was the overall champion ahead of Waukesha South and Darlington took third overall.

"To bump heads with those schools and be up there it really was a confidence booster," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said. "It's good to go up there and get the feel for state meet and how fast you should go out."

Darlington junior Tyson Miehe won the Division 2-3 race with a time of 16:04, but Darlington coaches had him clocked in the 15:50 range.

Senior Quinn Cullen took seventh (16:33) and Thomas Schultz was 16th (17:02).

Senior Garth Garrison took 21st (17:11) and Patrick Roche finished 35th (17:38).

"Tyson ran his best race of the year and the rest of the guys continued to run with the consistency they have had all season," Miehe said.

The Darlington girls cross country team edged two-time defending state champion Oshkosh Lourdes 127-144. Darlington senior Christa Wamsley finished 11th (15:25) and senior Cheyenne Wolfe was 23rd (16:10) to lead the Redbirds, which are ranked No. 1. Claire Cullen took 26th (16:17), senior Harley Douglas took 33rd (16:24) and senior Tatum Evenstad was 34th (16:26). Fellow senior Rebecca Mathias took 37th (16:30).

"Our pack of runners proved to be too much for Oshkosh Lourdes," Miehe said. "Both teams are running with a great sense of purpose and know we have some work to do as the season is winding down."
