MARSHALL - The Darlington High School boys cross country team dominated the field and rolled to the championship of the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday.

Darlington senior Jaden Komprood was the individual champion, finishing in a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds.

The Redbirds had five runners in the top seven to finish ahead of Cambridge-Deerfield for the team title.

Sophomore Tanner Evenstad placed fourth (17:00) followed by senior Blake Cwynar in fifth (17:01), freshman Payton Heinberg in sixth (17:01) and senior Sean Barbee in seventh (17:02).

Cambridge-Deerfield, ranked No. 7 in Division 2, was no match for the depth of the Redbirds.

"We did it against a strong Division 2 team," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said. "Our guys ran a smart second half of the race."

The Darlington girls captured fifth place. The Redbirds were led by sophomore Erin Wolf, who finished 13th (21:38). Junior teammate Paige Schilling took 16th (21:51), and sophomore Emma Crist finished 19th (22:01). Sophomore teammate Reghan Komprood placed 33rd (23:15), and freshman Ilse Mendez was 39th (24:10). The Redbirds were running without No. 5 runner in sophomore Meghan Douglas, who is on crutches after a cow stepped on her foot last weekend.

"I think we had a letdown a little bit," Miehe said. "Some of it was Meghan's injury and some of it was we were coming off the River Valley Invite. When you are missing your fifth runner it changes things."
