Redbird boys display depth at Benton Invite

PLATTEVILLE - If its performance in the Benton Invitational on Saturday is any indication, the Darlington boys track team will be loaded and will contend for a SWAL Conference title this year.

The Redbirds won both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays during the Benton Invite at UW-Platteville. The 1,600 relay team of Jordan Heinberg, Trynton Schwartz, Aaron Stauffacher and Mitchell Wedig finished first with a time of 3 minutes, 46.71 seconds, which was about 11 seconds faster than River Ridge.

The 3,200 relay team of Heinberg, Matt McDaniel, Kent Miehe and Destin Komprood took first with a time of 9:39.99, which was about 33 seconds ahead of runner-up Pecatonica-Argyle.

Darlington senior Jeff Reichling won the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 2 3/4 inches. The Redbirds had a 1-2 finish in the 3,200, with Miehe taking first place (11:10.64) and Schwartz finishing second (12:10.97). Connor Roche finished second in the 800 (2:22.9) and in the 1,600 (5:04). The Redbirds had two of the top three milers, as Markus Garrison finished third in the 1,600 (5:14).

Darlington's Braden Zywicki won the triple jump (39-11) and took second in the 55 high hurdles (:8.53). Nick King won the 400 for the Redbirds with a time of 57.3 seconds, and Wedig finished second in the 40 hurdles (:9.1).

Pecatonica senior Lee Vlasak won the 55 in 6.57 seconds.

Darlington sophomore Alex Erickson took second in both the long jump (19-4 1/4) and high jump (5-8). Zach Brown finished third in the 40 hurdles (:9.73) and the high jump (5-8).

The Redbirds added a second-place finish in the 800 relay with a time of 1:40.75, which was less than a second behind first-place River Ridge.
