Red Hawks topple Monroe

MILTON - After turning in a solid performance in a dual meet last week against the state's top-ranked Division 2 team in Stoughton, the Monroe High School wrestling team had aspirations of knocking off Milton in a dual meet Monday.

However, Milton, ranked ninth in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online Division 1 state poll, rolled to a 48-19 win over the Cheesemakers.

"We fared much better against the best team in the state," Monroe coach Tom Witt said, referencing the Cheesemakers' match against Stoughton. "If we would have came out and wrestled like that it would have been a much different story."

In the first match of the meet, Milton's Tom Rakestraw rode out Monroe senior Kyle Walter at heavyweight to knock him off in ultimate overtime 3-2. It was the fourth overtime and Walter started in the down position. He needed to escape or else the winning point would be awarded to Rakestraw. Walter couldn't get the escape he needed.

"Things just snowballed from there," Witt said. "We had a lot of kids just overmatched."

Monroe (9-7, 3-2 Badger South) didn't win a match until junior Sam Kind at 160 pounds cruised to a 9-0 win.

Junior Dempzy Foley (170), ranked 11th in Division 2, posted a pin in 3 minutes.

Senior Hayden Arneson (195), ranked third in Division 2, defeated Milton's Jerry Lipke 4-2. Lipke is ranked eighth in Division 1.

"It was a gutsy performance," Witt said of Arneson.

The other win for the Cheesemakers came from freshman Bodie Minder (220), who won on a pin in 1:30.

Monroe will wrestle in the Badger Conference tournament Saturday at Monona Grove High School.
