STOUGHTON - The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op snapped a streak of being shut out in four games, but lost a heartbreaker to Milton 8-4 Friday at the Mandt Community Arena in Stoughton.
Milton's John Fletcher scored four goals. Monroe sophomore Tyler Johnson scored two goals and had two assists.
Monroe's Jared Kleckner scored a goal on assists from Johnson and Jeff Guilliams at 11 minutes, 30 seconds in the first period to tie the game at 1. Johnson gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead scoring a goal on an assist by senior Mitchell Einbeck at 8:23. The Red Hawks scored two more goals in the first period to take a 3-2 lead.
The Red Hawks went up 5-2 in the second period, but the Avalanche rallied. Jeff Guilliams scored a goal on passes from Cade Martin and Johnson to cut the Red Hawks' lead to 5-3. Johnson scored his second goal on an assist by Martin with 1:27 to go in the second period to slice the Red Hawks' lead to 5-4.
Milton (2-9) sealed the victory with three goals in the third period.
"I thought we had the momentum to come back and tie things up in the third period," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "We were getting to the puck first and getting the shots on net, but we got burned by penalties and lost our momentum."
Avalanche sophomore goaltender Dan Guilliams had 38 saves. With the loss, Monroe drops to 0-12, 0-5 Badger South.
