Wiota fends off Argyle in HTL clash
baseball

WIOTA — The Indians walked away with an 8-3 win over the Argyle Beavers in a Home Talent Sunday League Western South Division game June 30.

Ben Conway got the win on the mound, tossing a complete game. Conway struck out seven batters and allowed six hits and six walks on 156 pitches. Two of the three runs against him were earned.

Kris Rieder took the loss for Argyle, allowing seven earned runs on five hits, four walks and a hit by pitch in just 1.2 innings of work. Southpaw Ryan Erickson worked the final 6.1 innings on the hill for the Beavers. Erickson struck out five batters and scattered seven hits, two walks and a hit batsman.

Argyle’s Lee Bohlman hit an RBI infield single in the top of the first to score Dylan Schwitz, but Wiota bounced right back. Rooney Janecke led off the bottom of the first with a hit-by-pitch on just the second pitch of the day. A hit and three straight walks brought in two runs before an out was recorded. The Indians plated another run on a Will Schwartz two-out single to center.

The second inning appeared to be going better for Rieder, as he retired the first two batters he faced. But that all soon collapsed, as the next four Wiota players reached base on two doubles, a walk and a single. Erickson took over and struggled to start, allowing his first three batters to reach base and a run to score, but he closed out the frame with bases loaded.

Argyle got a run back in the third on a sacrifice fly to center by Bohlman, and Tylor Henneman doubled home a run in the fifth to make it 7-3. Wiota scored the final run of the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Janecke.

Merril Brunson had three hits for Wiota, while Schwartz and Janecke each had two hits. Jeff Solberg walked twice and Jesse Sturtz had three RBIs.  Henneman had two hits for Argyle.

Wiota (6-2) leads the Western South Division, with Argyle (5-5) and Hollandale (4-4) in second. Blanchardville (4-5) and Shullsburg-Benton (4-5) are 2.5 games out of first while Ridgeway (1-7) occupies the cellar.

All six teams were scheduled to be in action July 4 in crossover games. Blanchardville hosts Argyle July 6 at 4 p.m., while Shullsburg-Benton has a doubleheader in Ridgeway the same date. Wiota is at Hollandale July 8 at 1 p.m.
