GREEN BAY — Black Hawk graduate Jen Wellnitz was recently named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-Horizon League, and to the league’s all-defensive team.

Wellnitz, a senior for UW-Green Bay, became the first player in program history to be named to three all-defensive teams, and is the back-to-back winner of the DYOP award.

Wellnitz was the only Phoenix on any first-team season honor this season. She’s third on the team in scoring with 8.8 points per game, though less than two points behind team leader Frankie Wurtz. Wellnitz averaged 44.8 percent shooting from the field and 31.4 percent from beyond the arc. She hit 76.9 percent of her free throws — the highest on the team. Through the quarterfinals of the league tournament (26 total games), Wellnitz leads the team in assists (91) and steals (73).

Carly Mohns, a Brodhead graduate, has started all 29 games for the Phoenix this year, averaging 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game with a 44.6 field goal percentage.

Green Bay enters the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament with a 21-8 overall record and a 15-3 mark in league play. This is was first time in 20 seasons the Phoenix didn’t win the regular season league title. Coach Kevin Borseth notched his 400th career victory in the 73-30 win over Cleveland State in the quarterfinals March 6. Green Bay plays Youngstown State in the semifinals March 11.
