Speedway heats up as season winds down

DARLINGTON — With just two weeks of racing left before the season championship, the intensity on the Lafayette County Speedway track is growing. 

After a week off, racing returned to the speedway July 31. Jamie Pfeiffer (56) of Freeport won the Economy Late Models feature race, with Jason Robbins (21) of Benton second and DJ Sweet (3D) of Georgetown third. Pfeiffer leads Robbins by three points in the season standings, with Sweet 20 points back in third.

Dakota Simonsen (60) of Fairfax, Iowa, won the IMCA Hobby Stock race. Matt Bennett (24) of Shullsburg was second, with David Crimmins (16C) of Dubuque taking third. Bennett’s win pulls him closer to Crimmins in the season standings, where he now trails by just two points at 191-189. Thomas Wood of Monroe is third in points (174), followed by Jeff Bennett of Darlington (167).

Freeport’s Jeff Larson (B1) won the IMCA Modified race, with Nick Schliem (3N) of Brodhead taking second. Kenny Kostenbader (33K) of Freeport was third. Larson leads the point standings by eight over Derek Thompson of Monroe. Freeport’s Mike Fryer is third (82), with Trent Wyssbrod of Monroe and Brad Moring of Freeport tied for fourth at 168. 

In the IMCA Northern SportMod race, Hazel Green’s Jason Roth (31) took first, with Benton’s Kyle Hoffman (14) second and Freeport’s Ed Mills (41) third. Roth leads Hoffman by nine points for the season lead, with German Valley’s Corey Kuntzelman 10 points behind Roth.

In the 4-Cylinder Sport Compact event, Gratiot’s Jared Kingery (911) took the checkered flag ahead of Benton’s Eric Beau (23). Ryan Petta (64) of German Valley was third and Monticello’s Austin Skogen (M60) was fourth. Beau has a commanding 16-point lead on Dickeyville’s Dylan Kuhl in the season point standings, with Kingery 17 points behind. 

The Lafayette County Speedway is hosting its annual Family Night Aug. 7, with the first 150 children in attendance receiving a price. 

The next week of racing Aug. 14. The season was officially extended on Aug. 1, pushing the championship races to Aug. 21. The Bob Larson Memorial Races are scheduled for Sept. 18 and 19.


Julien Dubuque Classic Fair Races, Aug. 2

DUBUQUE — Two days after winning the modified race in Darlington, Jeff Larson won the feature at the Dubuque Fairgrounds. Monroe’s Trent Wyssbrod (492) was fifth. 

In the Hobby Stocks race, Matt Bennett of Shullsburg was fourth, with Lukas Short of Maquoketa, Iowa, taking first, followed by Simonsen and Crimmins. 

Tyler Bruening of Decorah, Iowa, won the Late Models race, with Josh Starr of Tipton, Iowa, coming out in front of Kingery in the Sport Compact event.
