New classes offered for June, July
water zumba
Water Zumba at the Monroe Municipal Pool takes place Tuesdays and Thursday from June 16 to Aug. 20.

MONROE — The Monroe Parks and Recreation Departmemt will be opening the following park and recreation classes for July, but will still be following Center for Disease Control guidelines (listed below) for the classes listed to provide safe environment for children. 

Parents may register children by stopping at the Parks and Recreation office, lower level of City Hall, or register online at monroewi.activityreg.com. For questions, please call the office at 329-2460.

The department is excited to offer more opportunities outside for the children to participate in July and wants to encourage parents to follow the guidelines above for the programs to keep our staff and children safe during this time. 


Tennis Camp

High School Co-ed Tennis Camp is for players entering grades 8-12 to improve their ability in doubles and singles matches. Camp will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 22-25 at Recreation Park. 

Matt Bordner is the instructor.


Tennis Lessons

There are two options for morning and two options for evening lessons.

●  Evening lessons for grades 3-5 will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from June 30 to July 28. Grades 6-8 will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The first 30 minutes of the session will be lessons and the next 30 minutes will be match play. Instructors will be Kate Maliszewski and Cecily Burch.

●  There are two sessions of morning lessons. The first session is July 6-17, with session two from July 20-31. Lessons will be Mondays to Thursdays from 9:15-10:15 a.m. for grades 3-5, and grades 6-8 will train from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Fridays will be rain dates. Alex Lentz will coach the first session, while Bordner will lead the second session.

Tennis balls will be numbered and athletes are asked to bring their own rackets, if they have them. Otherwise, Parks and Recreation rackets are available and will be spray sanitized after each session. Athletes will “gel up and gel down” before and after lessons. Limit to 10 children per class. 

The department asks everyone to observe social distancing. Parents may come to watch and are asked to wear face masks and bring their own lawn chairs rather than sit on bleachers. Masks for students are optional.  


Swimming lessons 

Levels:

●  Pre-school swim lessons and Levels 1, 2, and 3 will all be parent-and-child to avoid contact with non-family members. Instructors will teach the children to swim and the parent will be there to hold the child and help manipulate their arms and legs if need be. Instructors will be out of the water on the pool deck.   

●  Levels 4, 5 and 6 for advanced swimmers will be taught by the instructor from the pool deck.

●  There will need to be three participants per level to run the class. 

●  Kick boards used for swim lessons will be placed in a separate bin after use to be disinfected.

●  One bin will be for used kickboards that have not been disinfected and another bin will be used for kickboards that have been disinfected.

●  Half hour lessons will be offered in three-week sessions, two days per week from July 6-23.

●  10:15-10:45 a.m. — Mondays and Wednesdays

●  6-6:30 p.m. — Tuesdays and Thursdays

●  5:15-5:45 p.m. - Mondays and Wednesdays 


July Tot Lot Playground at Honey Creek 

There are still some spots available in the July Tot Lot program at Honey Creek Park. Children ages 3-5 can attend.

The plan for Tot Lot is to have a group of 10 children, plus two instructors, at the Honey Creek Park shelter. The Twining Tot Lot program is full. There will be separate indoor sites arranged for rain or high-heat days.

July Tot Lot will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday from July 6 to 23. After the gathering time, the children will have their scheduled activities such as: crafts, games, story time, songs and snack. Hands will be washed frequently, especially before and after snacks. Toys will be cleaned frequently throughout the day and at the end of each day. Parents are asked to bring their own snack for their child each day. 

Monroe Parks and Recreation guidelines for providing a safe program:

●  Parents should wear masks when dropping off or picking up kids at the Tot Lot and continue social distance from other parents that are arriving.  

●  Staff will be wearing masks.

●  Frequent cleaning and sanitizing of all tables, toys, etc.

●  Hand sanitizer to be used by staff and children and will “gel up” their hands when they come and “gel down” their hands when they leave. 

●  At this time, the CDC is not requiring to check temperatures, parents are asked not to bring children who are ill to class. If a child becomes ill during a class and a parent is not present, the parent will be called by the instructor.

●  Children will be asked to bring a bag of their own art supplies each day to include: crayons, sidewalk chalk, etc. to use for craft time. A supply list will be available.

●  Playground equipment will be able to be used.

●  Restrooms will be cleaned according to CDC guidelines.

●  Enforcing of social distancing by using spot markers on the ground or on picnic tables showing where to sit and how many can play at each station such as bubbles, sidewalk chalk, etc. 

●  Children will bring their own snack.

●  There will be no Tot Lot potluck this year.


Water Aerobics 

Water Zumba, sponsored by Monroe Clinic-SSM Health, with certified instructor Connie Wyssbrod will be offered at the Monroe Pool from 5-5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 16 to August 20. There is no fee if with a season pool pass.

Water Aerobics with certified instructor Bridget Cotter, Fitness Director at the Senior Center, will start June 23. Aerobics will be from 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is no fee if with a season pool pass.

Participants need to social distance in the class. They need to come dressed for the class and leave through the north gate at the pool with their suit wet.  


Adventure Playground classes 

Monroe Parks and Recreation Department will offer three opportunities for playground fun this summer for children ages 6-12 years old.   


Sports, Squirt Guns & Pool Fun

This program meets from 1-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays from July 7 to August 11 at Recreation Park North shelter.  

Each week, we will play a different sport: kickball, dodgeball, soccer, baseball, flag football, whiffle ball, etc. One group of 6- to 8-year-olds will play a sport for 45 minutes while another group of 10- to 12-year-olds plays with squirt guns. Then they’ll switch. Kids should bring their own squirt gun with name on it. The department will be sanitizing all equipment after the kids use it. The group will go to the pool from 3 to 4 p.m. and back to Swiss ALPS after to play.  


Cool Experiments, Water Rockets, Nerf Contests & Pool Fun

This program meets from 1-4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from July 8 to August 12 at Recreation Park North shelter.

Each week, science experiments will be performed for the first 45 minutes of class. Children ages 6 to 12 will make their own Lava lamp, rainbow fizzies and more. After experiments, children will make water rockets or have Nerf contests before heading to the pool from 3 to 4 p.m. Children will go back to Swiss ALPS after to play. 


Adventure Lego, STEM Challenges & Pool Fun

This program meets from 1-4:30 p.m. on Thursdays from July 9 to August 13 at Recreation Park North shelter.

There will different Lego activities for boys and girls ages 6-12. Activities include Lego backpack tag, Lego crafts and building Legos the first 45 minutes. Then STEM challenges including building a catapult, egg drop challenge, 100-cup tower and more. The class will head to the pool from 3-4 p.m., then go back to Swiss ALPS afterward. 

Monroe Parks and Recreation Guidelines for providing a safe program:

●  Parents should wear masks when dropping off or picking up kids at the adventure club. Please keep social distance for other parents arriving.  

●  Staff will be wearing masks.

●  Cleaning and sanitizing tables and games and equipment used for each activity. 

●  Hand sanitizer to be used for staff and children and will “gel up when they get there” and “gel down their hands” after the program is over.  

●  At this time, the CDC is not requiring to check temperatures but only asking parents to not bring children when they are sick or instructor will call parent if the child gets sick during class. 

●  Children will be asked to bring a bag of their own art supplies each day to include: crayons, sidewalk chalk, etc. to use for craft time. There will be a supply list.

●  Playground equipment will be available.

●  Restrooms will be cleaned according to CDC guidelines.

●  Children will bring their own snack and their own water bottle because there are no drinking fountains available at the park.
