Monroe grad Mathiason scores first points for UW

MONROE — Former Monroe girls basketball player Sydney Mathiason scored her first career points for the Badgers Dec. 12 in an 85-38 win over Chicago State.

Mathiason, a 2018 MHS grad and walk-on freshman at Wisconsin, was 3 of 4 from the free throw line in four minutes of play. She was 0-for-1 from the 3-point line. It was her second in-game appearance since joining the team.

Elsewhere, Black Hawk graduate Jen Wellnitz had four points, three assists and five rebounds as the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay lost to No. 19 Marquette 80-54 Dec. 15. Senior Carly Mohns, a Brodhead graduate, had nine points and five rebounds for the Phoenix in the loss. Marquette led by 11 after the first quarter and held a 44-19 advantage at halftime.

On Dec. 8, Green Bay defeated Wisconsin 55-46, with Wellnitz the game-high scorer with 14 points, four steals and five rebounds. Mohns had two points and two rebounds. The Badgers led 25-23 at halftime, but a 19-11 run by the Phoenix in the third quarter put Green Bay up for good.

Green Bay’s next game was scheduled for Dec. 18 against UW-Parkside, while a Dec. 28 Horizon League game against Milwaukee awaits. Meanwhile, the Badgers host Evansville Dec. 21 and travel to Minnesota Dec. 28.
