Meier, Setterstrom roll to men’s doubles title

MONROE — Silas Setterstrom added to his trophy case Sunday with a second city championship of the summer after he and Frank Meier lost just one game in three matches on their way to the doubles title.

“In the men’s tournament we had a lot of new faces this year,” said Brad Saugstad, head of the tournament. “In the end, Silas and Frank were just too tough of a team.”

Setterstrom and Meier outdueled Josh and Ethan Towne in the opening round 6-0, 6-0, then dispensed Cody Polizzi and Alex Lentz in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0. In the championship, Inwha Shon and Donny Paisley picked up a game in the first set but still lost to Setterstrom and Meier 6-1, 6-0. 

Jeremy Miller and Saugstad teamed up and took third place. After beating Ayden Bergemann and Landon Knobel in the first round 6-0, 6-1, the duo fell to Shon and Paisley 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Miller and Saugstad blanked Polizzi and Lentz 6-0, 6-0.

Matt and Kyle Bordner won the consolation bracket. After losing to Shon and Paisley in the opening round 6-1, 6-0, the duo defeated Bergemann and Knobel in the consolation semifinals 6-2, 6-0. In the consolation championship, the Bordners defeated Josh and Ethan Towne 6-0, 6-0.

The Townes defeated Gabe and Ben Moon in the consolation semifinals 6-4, 6-2. The Moons lost to Polizzi and Lentz in the first round 6-3, 6-4.

On the women’s side, Emily Boyd and Tessa Brown took home the championship. The duo received a first-round bye and took out Hallie Signer and Becky Thoman in the semifinals 6-3, 6-1. In the championship, Brown and Boyd defeated Maggie Setterstrom and Emma Towne 6-3, 6-4.

Maggie Setterstrom and Towne had the play-in game in the first round and defeated Kiara and Kerstin Miller 6-1, 6-0 to move on. Then the duo upset Grace Tostrud and Jensen Christensen 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the semifinals. 

Tostrud and Christensen knocked off Signer and Thoman in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-1. Signer and Thoman had defeated the Millers in the consolation bracket 6-2, 6-3 earlier in the tournament.
