HTL Playoffs: Fever melt Rockies 13-7

HOLLANDALE — Shullsburg-Benton jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning, and then used a 7-run third to blow the game wide open in the opening round of the HTL playoffs. The Fever went on to defeat Hollandale 13-7.

The Rockies (11-6) tried to get back into the game, slowing chipping away each inning. Hollandale scored two runs in the bottom of the third, another run in the sixth and put a 4-spot up in the seventh, but the damage was done. Shullsburg-Benton (9-8) put two insurance runs on the board for good measure in the top of the ninth.

Justin Crotty, Jim Pavlik, Gaige Lueder and Tommy Behrens each had three hits for the Fever, while Jacob Berendes had two hits. Jayson Haldiman was 1 for 5 with a walk and four RBIs.

Kyle Thompson and Griffin Rear had two hits each at the top of the order for Hollandale.

Berendes got the win on the mound, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing just three earned runs on eight hits and three walks. Lane Kamps finished the game on the hill for the Fever, stranding four baserunners in 2.2 innings of work.

Shullsburg-Benton will play at Verona (16-1) Aug. 11 in Round 2 of the playoffs.


Pine Bluff/Mount Horeb 7, Argyle 2

MOUNT HOREB — The Bluffers used three pitchers that combined to hold Argyle to just four hits on the day.

Bryce Hopwood tossed the first five innings for Pine Bluff, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. Jerin Schubert tossed the next three innings, scattering a hit and a walk, and Cole Payne struck out the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth.

Argyle starter Lukas Kolasch allowed seven runs on nine hits and six walks in 5.2 innings of work. Kris Rieder relieved. Kolasch struck out seven and Rieder struck out two.

Lance Rossing was 1 for 1 with three walks and two runs scored for Argyle, which also got a double from Tylor Henneman. Klayton Krantz was 2 for 5 with a triple for Pine Bluff, which also got two hits from Logan Krantz and a homer and three RBIs from Ryan Vogel.

Argyle (8-9) scored a run in the top of the first inning and tied it at 2 in the top of the fifth. The Bluffers (13-4) used a 5-run sixth to pull away.
