Four-cylinder race sees different winner again
Raceway

DARLINGTON — The July 10 races at the Lafayette County Speedway saw plenty of action, with 66 cars taking part in 15 races.

The new hobby stock class started the night off, with eight cars battling it out. Longtime Shullsburg racer Matt Bennett (24), found his way to the checkered flag first. Dakota Simonsen (66) from Fairfax, Iowa took second, with David Crimmins (16C) of Dubuque taking third.

Next up were 10 cars in the four-cylinder division. With a new ride, Troy Pokoj (49) of Apple River won the feature. Second went to Dylan Kuhl (83) of Dickeyville, with Eric Beau (23) of Benton third. There has been a different winner in the four-cylinder class in each week of racing this season.

Twelve limited late models raced 18 laps to find a winner, with Jason Robbins (21) of Benton entering victory lane. Second place went to Steve Schueller (17S) of Dubuque and in third place was Jamie Pfeiffer (56) of Freeport.

The fastest class at the track was the Modifieds, which had 14 cars race 20 laps in no time. Jeff ‘Bone’ Larson (B1) of Freeport again found his way to victory. Second this week was Derek Thompson (34T) of Monroe, and third place went to Matt Crist (8C) of Darlington.

As a penalty for so many cautions in previous races, the SportMod division found their way to the back of the race night. The 22-car race went almost yellow flag free for all 12 laps.

A disqualification after failure to go through tech right away from the feature winner led to an interesting ending. Jay Ethridge (4E) of Verona was disqualified, which meant Zach Maurer (87) of Shannon, Illinois, ended up winning after only his second night back since the 2018 race season after recovering from surgery. Jason Roth (31) of Hazel Green took second, and in third place was Kyle Neels (77H) of Freeport.

The Lafayette County Speedway is set for two nights of race action on July 17 and July 18 during the Lafayette County Fair. All five classes race both nights, with the Badger Midgets returning after a nearly 40-year absence from the track July 18.

Hot laps kick off at 6:45 p.m. July 17, and start at 6 p.m. the following night. The band Meatloaf will be playing after the conclusion of the races Saturday. For more information, visit LafayetteCountySpeedway-WI.com or visit the speedway Facebook page.
