Flag football registration open; one-day programs available

MONROE — Registration is now open for Monroe Parks and Recreation Fall Flag Football for children entering 5K through 6th grade in the fall.

Deadline to register is Friday, Aug. 6 and children must register by Aug. 6 in order to receive a jersey.

Fee of $50 for residents & $60 for non-residents includes reversible NFL Replica Jersey. Sample jersey sizes are available at Parks & Rec office if needed. The first practice is as follows:

●  All K & 1st graders will practice Thursday, Aug. 26 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at Twining East

●  All 2nd & 3rd graders will practice Thursday, Aug. 26 from 6:15-7:15 p.m. at Twining East

●  All 4th & 6th graders will practice Thursday, Aug. 26 from 7:15-8:15 p.m. at Twining East

Additional Practices will be scheduled by each team’s volunteer coaches.  Families will receive a practice schedule the first night.

Games will be played on Thursdays at various parks in Monroe from Sept. 2 to Oct. 7. Full schedules will be handed out at first practice. Volunteer coaches are needed.


FOOTBALL WITH THE CHEESEMAKERS ONE DAY PROGRAM

Participants can come meet and complete drills with the Monroe Cheesemakers. Everyone will receive a Campion’s Champions t-shirt sponsored by Colony Brands. This program is open to anyone 5K-8th grade this fall. It will be held on Friday, Aug. 27 from 3:45-5 p.m. at the Monroe High School practice field (rain site MHS Gym). The cost is $10.00.

Multiple One-Day programs available

MONROE — The Monroe Parks and Recreation office has several upcoming One-Day programs open for registration.


Zoozort — Zooriffic

This program will be held at Middle School will give children a chance to touch and see animals like a wallaby, chameleon, kinkajou, couti, armadillo, fennee fox and a chinchilla. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

●  No age limit, Thursday, Aug. 5, 5 p.m., $10 per family


Big Wheels Keep on Turning 

Monroe Truck Equipment will be bringing trucks with big wheels. Children will have the opportunity to honk the horn and sit in the trucks. Kids will race the tire down the hill and race their own scooter wheels through the obstacle course dodging the orange cones. Held at Northeast Park.

●  3-10 years old, Friday, Aug. 6, 1-3 p.m., $12 R, $17 NR

Bubble fun

“Me & You” Paint Night 

Kids bring a grown-up to join for some painting fun. They will each get an 8-inch by 10-inch canvas to paint, and each will paint one half of the picture. Held at Monroe Parks & Rec Community Center.

●  5 years and up, Wednesday, Aug. 11, 5:30-7 p.m., $25 R, $30 NR


The 3 “P”s — Picnic, Petting Zoo & Pony Rides

Families can bring their own picnic food and enjoy an evening with the animals. Guests will see a variety of animals at the park including chickens, bunnies and more. There will be an opportunity to ride on a pony and learn to do the Chicken Dance. Children should be accompanied by an adult.  

●  No age limit, Thursday, Aug. 12, 6 p.m., $10 per family at Northeast Park


Calling all Ninjas

Leap, bob, and weave your way through a treacherous obstacle course. A live Tae Kwon Do demonstration and fun projects complete the adventure. Held at Northeast Park.

●  5-12 years old, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1-3 p.m., $12 R, $17 NR

Princess & Superhero Night

Wear a favorite princess or superhero costume and receive a free carnival game ticket. Dairy Queens dress as Princesses and staff as superheroes. Held at Monroe Square. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

●  No age limit, Wednesday, Aug. 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Small fee for games.


Elsa’s Dance Party

Come dance the night away with Elsa and Anna. Games and dancing at Turner Hall.  Jane Swiggum will do face painting.

●  3-12 years, Tuesday, Aug. 24, 5-7:30 p.m., $10 per family 


Back to School Key Chains — Sea Creature Gobbies

GOBBIES (pronounced GO- Beez) are colorful little Sea Creatures that kids can “Make & Take” to put on backpacks. Held at Northeast Park.

●  5-12 years, Wednesday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., $12 R, $17 NR

Deadline is Aug. 2. Choose: blue octopus, pink fish or blue shark.  


Down & Dirty

Play shaving cream dodgeball, water balloon crossfire, muddy kickball and more. Wear old clothes or a bathing suit and bring beach towel and change of clothes or leave messy and wet. Held at Recreation Park South shelter.
