GREEN BAY — Brodhead graduate Carly Mohns is leaving the University of Iowa women’s basketball team and will be a graduate transfer to UW-Green Bay for her fifth and final season of college eligibility this fall.
Mohns graduated in 2014 as Brodhead’s leading scorer, which has since been topped twice. A 6-1 forward, Mohns played in 30 games a year ago for the Hawkeyes and had nine points and six rebounds in an upset of No. 19 Michigan. She was granted a medical hardship waiver for the 2015-16 season after undergoing season-ending surgery in December 2015.
She joins former AAU teammate and Black Hawk graduate Jen Wellnitz in their final season of college eligibility. Wellnitz is the reigning defensive player of the year in the Horizon League, and the Phoenix will be vying for an unprecedented 21st-consectutive conference title. UW-Green Bay is also seeking its 19th NCAA Tournament appearance.
Mohns is able to transfer to UW-Green Bay and play immediately because she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation management. For most situations, if a student-athlete transfers schools prior to graduation, they are ineligible to play for one calendar year.
The Phoenix open exhibition play with a home game against UW-Stevens Point Oct. 24. The Pointers feature another former Brodhead player, 2018 graduate and current all-time leading scorer Erin Nyhus. Former Monroe basketball player Diane (Hawkins) Gilbert is an assistant coach.
The regular season opener is Nov. 6 at home against Northwestern. Other premier games include a home matchup against Wisconsin Dec. 8, a road game at Marquette Dec. 15 and the Horizon League opener at UW-Milwaukee Dec. 28.
