MADISON - When Megan Scheele made a free throw with 7 minutes, 50 seconds left in the game Wednesday, she was greeted with cheers and flash bulbs.
Her free throw wasn't a game-winner, but it was a record-breaker.
Scheele, a New Glarus High School graduate, became Edgewood College's all-time leading scorer during the Eagles' 68-46 win over Rockford College at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
The former record holder, Deb Boomsma (Cuprey), was on hand to congratulate Scheele. Boomsma, a 1991 Edgewood graduate, had held the record for 18 years, collecting 1,854 points in her 107-game career.
Scheele, a senior forward, needed 16 points Wednesday to pass the mark. But she scored only five points in a turnover-heavy first half. Her basket at the end of the first half gave Edgewood a 24-18 lead and Scheele momentum going into the second half.
She scored the first four points after halftime, and ended up with 18 second-half points. Scheele made 8 of 15 shots from the field, and added eight rebounds.
The victory was the Eagles' fifth in a row and ninth in the past 10 tries. Edgewood (9-5, 7-1) now has won seven consecutive Northern Athletics Conference games.
For nearly a 10-minute stretch in the second half, the Eagles embarked on a 21-5 run started by Eagle freshman Ashley Averkamp. It was Averkamp who took the pressure off Scheele when she found it difficult to step away from the defense, and finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
