MONROE - Jordan Hirsbrunner and Nick Baumann have each broken Monroe Middle School seventh-grade cross country records that have stood for decades.
Hirsbrunner, a seventh-grader at Monroe Middle School, broke Tammy Fahrney's 30-year-old girls cross country record at the Mount Horeb Invitational Sept. 22. She ran the 1 1/2 mile race in 9 minutes, 30 seconds, seven seconds faster than Fahrney did in 1981.
"I was really happy and tired," Hirsbrunner said. "It was weird that it was one of my friend's aunts who had it. It would be cool for me to hold that record for 30 years."
Baumann, also a seventh-grader at the middle school, broke Matt Gruber's 22-year old boys record. Baumann finished the 1 1/2 mile race at the Wisconsin Heights Invitational in 8:25, which was 25 seconds faster than Gruber's previous mark (8:50) set in 1989.
"It was exciting," Baumann said. "I felt proud. I didn't know it was that old of a record. My goal is to beat that in any way."
The middle school boys cross country team has won one invitational and finished second in two others. The middle school girls cross country team is unbeaten.
The Monroe Middle School hosts its final cross country meet, the Ekena Invite on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Twining Park. The first race, the seventh-grade girls, is set to start at 4:15 p.m.
"I want to get into the low 9 minutes," Hirsbrunner said. "I want to try to break my record."
