BRODHEAD - With the Monroe High School softball team leading Brodhead 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with no outs Monday, a downpour hit and the game was called.
The Cheesemakers and Cardinals were delayed 30 minutes due to lightning earlier in the game. When the rain hit, the Cheesemakers were three outs from winning in an official game in five innings.
"We just needed five more minutes, and we would have got the game in," Monroe coach Joe O'Leksy said. "(Pitcher) Olivia (Bobak) was in control."
The Cheesemakers (15-8) wanted to play so they didn't have a seven-day layoff between games before the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal game at Jefferson on Wednesday.
"It was good for us to have some competition because we didn't want to be off for a one week," O'Leksy said. "I think it was good for both teams. Playing right now you get more out of it than practicing."
It had been eight days since Brodhead had last played a game. Brodhead (9-10) will host Palmyra-Eagle in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal on Wednesday.
