BELLEVILLE - The Monroe boys soccer team took third place at the Sugar River tournament on Saturday.

Sugar River, which finished second, beat Monroe 1-0 in the first game. Sugar River senior Otto Kienitz's goal at 7 minutes, 17 seconds on a penalty kick was enough to fend off the Cheesemakers.

"I think with homecoming we came out really slow," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said. "The guys were sluggish in the first game. I wish we would have won the whole thing. We were looking forward to winning it."

The Cheesemakers rebounded and knocked off Platteville 3-1. Monroe senior Nigel Tourdot had one goal and two assists.

Monroe freshman Kevin Noriega scored the first goal against the Hillmen on an assist from Tourdot. Tourdot then scored an unassisted goal. Corey Flannery scored the final goal for the Cheesemakers off an assist from Tourdot.

"I thought we had a lot more energy in the second game and we got to the ball," Stamm said.

Lakeside Lutheran defeated Sugar River 4-3 in the championship game. The Raiders scored three first-half goals and led 3-2 at the half. Kienitz scored two goals to lead the Raiders.

Kienitz scored a goal off an assist from Travis Loffelholz at 11:00. He then scored his second goal off an assist from Matthew Viney in the 17th minute to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead, but the Raiders couldn't hang on.
