BELLEVILLE - Katie Viney scored three goals and junior Hannah Kernan added two more as the Sugar River Raiders opened their season with an 8-0 shutout over Poynette-Portage in Capitol South Conference girls soccer Thursday. With Sugar River leading, 2-0, Viney scored in the 22nd minute, then scored again on an assist by Mackenzie Christensen two minutes later to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
After Kernan scored at 45:07 to make it 5-0, Viney got her third goal of the game in the 47th minute to give the Raiders a 6-0 cushion. Sugar River (1-0) will host Stoughton in their next game Monday.
