Raiders soar at invite

BELLEVILLE - The Sugar River boys and girls track teams finished first and second respectively at the 2013 Raider Invite held Friday, May 10.

The girls had just two top finishers, but the Raiders placed second in several events to garner valuable points for the team, en route to a second-place finish overall with 123.5 points, just behind Columbus' 157. Black Hawk took eighth, Albany finished tenth, Pec-Argyle finished eleventh and Monticello finished thirteenth.

Alexis Hanson finished second in both the 100-meter dash (12.92 seconds) and the 200 (26.22). Madeline Brunner also grabbed two second-place finishes in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 21.30 seconds) and the 1,600 (5:15.44). Brunner just edged out Albany's Bailey Hlavachek in the 800 by six-tenths of a second.

Sugar River's Emily Diaz took second in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 17.38 seconds. Diaz also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 49.09 seconds. Black Hawk's Olivia Holland took second in the 300 hurdles, with a time of 48.95 seconds.

The Raiders finished just behind Pecatonica-Argyle in the 4x200 relay. Pec-Argyle's team of Hannah Swenson, Lizzy Ritschard, Emma Marion and Katie Zwicker finished third with a time of 1 minutes, 56.76 seconds.

The Raiders captured ten points for finishing first in the 4x800 relay. Sugar River's team of Sam Barr, Emily Denure, Kerry McCoy and Lauren O'Connor finished with a time of 10 minutes, 42.38 seconds.

Sugar River boasted another champion in the discus, where Jamie Brown took top honors with a throw of 89 feet, 0.50 inches.

The boys won by a wide margin, out-distancing second-place Lodi by a score of 185.50-129. Monticello finished sixth, Albany finished eighth, Pec-Argyle finished eleventh and Black Hawk finished twelfth.

Sugar River's Garrison Woods and Gabe Noyce went one-two in the 100-meter dash, with times of 11.45 seconds and 11.75 seconds respectively.

Pecatonica-Argyle's Nathan Loyd took first in the 400, with a time of 53.10 seconds.

Sugar River's Tucker McMahon took top honors in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 40.52 seconds.

Alexander Yeiser grabbed 10 points for the Raiders with his first-place finish in the 3,200 (10:15.17).

Sugar River's Kelvin Johnson grabbed another event win, with his first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (40.03 seconds)

In the 4x100 relay, Sugar River's quartet of Jim Chenoweth, Ethan Gassman, Noyce and Justin Stadelman finished second with a time of 46.23 seconds. In the 4x200, Johnson and Stadelman joined with Alex Gocht and Max Eggenberger to finish second with a time of 1 minute, 34.31 seconds. In the 4x400, Eggenberger and Noyce joined with Mitchell DeLorme and Spencer Jones to take second with a time of 3 minutes, 38.55 seconds. In the 4x800, Jones, McMahon and Yeiser joined Caleb Fredrickson to grab another second-place finish (8:41.74).

Woods grabbed three individual event wins, finishing first in the high jump (5-10), the long jump (20-9.75) and the triple jump (43.2).

In the shot put, Sugar River's Landon Zimmerman finished second with a throw of 43 feet even. Zimmerman also finished second in the discus, with a throw of 117 feet, 5 inches. Albany Logan Webb took first in the discus with a throw of 126 feet, 2 inches.
