Raiders run to second at Blue Jay Invitational

CAMBRIDGE - Both the Sugar River boys and girls track teams ran to second-place finishes at the Cambridge Blue Jay Invite April 8.

Sugar River's boys dominated the distance events. Senior Travis Beutler won the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 46.83 seconds and freshman teammate Ryan McCoy was second (4:48.63). McCoy won the 3,200 (10:24.56) by about 17 seconds. Dennis Haak won the 800 with a time of 2:03.5 seconds and teammate Beau York was second (2:08.3).

Mount Horeb-Barneveld outdistanced Sugar River, 149.5-106, for the team title. The Albany boys track team finished seventh with 34 points.

The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of McCoy, Haak, York and Wesley Morgan finished first with a time of 8:45.88, which was about 14 seconds ahead of second-place Albany.

Sugar River's Brian Anderson won the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.63 seconds, which was about two seconds ahead of Albany senior T.J. Bump, who was second. Bump took third in the 110 high hurdles (:16.20). Sugar River's Colton Crye finished second in the discus (134-6). Dylan Riley added a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (11-0).

Edgerton's girls team finished first (121) ahead of runner-up Sugar River (92).

The Raiders had the top two runners in the 800. Rachel Miller won the 800 with a time of 2:33.75 and teammate Alison Schmitz was second (2:35.38). Sugar River's Alexis Hanson took second in both the 100 (:13.32) and the 200 (:28.84). Sugar River sophomore Victoria Ortgiesen finished second in the 300 hurdles (:52.53).

The Raiders' 800 relay team of Emily Diaz, Megan Neperud, Sofia Julian and Hanson took third (1:59.53). The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of Schmitz, Miller, Brenna Sargent and Katie Schmitz also took third (10:57.97).

Albany's Ciara Kubesh took second in the long jump (14 feet, 8 inches) and junior Hillary Best was second in the discus (93-1). Sugar River's Jessica Putland finished third in the shot put (31-1) and Albany's Kaitlyn Schulz was fourth (29-2). Albany took 10th in the team standings with 31 points.
