BELLEVILLE - Jon Beckman already had one of the state's top Division 2 times in the 110-meter high hurdles when he stepped into the starting blocks at the 17th annual Raider Invitational on Friday.
The senior felt like he had an even faster time in him, and he was motivated to prove it on his home track.
"I was definitely looking to get my PR at this meet," said Beckman, who had previously run the season's sixth-fastest time in Wisconsin in the event.
Beckman accomplished his goal, cruising to victory in a meet-record time of 15 seconds.
"The weather was beautiful. Overall, I can't complain. I just got a PR, first place and set a new record," Beckman said. "It would mean everything to get to state and place high."
Sugar River edged Lodi 158-155 to win the championship.
Beckman wasn't the only one to set a meet record, as marks were eclipsed in seven events.
Sugar River sophomore Garrison Woods finished first and set records in the triple jump (43 feet, 10 inches) and long jump (21-0 1/2). He also won the high jump (6-2).
"I keep on improving," said Woods, a state qualifier in the triple jump and long jump in 2011. "I'm still trying to get to 44 feet (in the triple jump). My jumps have been way better at the end of the season. Hopefully I can win all the jumps at conference."
Sugar River's Ryan McCoy set two records, winning the 800 in 1:55.4 and the 1,600 in 4:35.2.
Teammate Wesley Morgan finished second to McCoy in both the 800 (1:59.6) and the 1,600 (4:43.2). Monticello's Evan Schultz was third in the 1,600 (4:54.4).
"(The records) didn't mean anything," said McCoy, who has the state's second-fastest 3,200 time this season. "I just wanted to go out and score points for the team to try to win this invite."
The Raiders' other victory was provided by Kelvin Johnson, who took the 300 hurdles title in 41.5, just ahead of Beckman (41.8). Sugar River's Josh Stern was second in the 400 (51.8).
Johnson teamed with McCoy, Stern and Morgan to win the 1,600 relay in a record 3:31, which was about five seconds ahead of Pecatonica-Argyle (3:36.2). Pecatonica-Argyle's Nick Huffman was third in the discus (130-0).
Black Hawk's 400 relay team of Jayden Rufenacht, DeeJay Warrell, Hayden Schliem and Jace Johnsrud posted a record-breaking victory in 44.8.
"All of our handoffs were good," Johnsrud said. "We felt good running. We want to get down to 43 seconds. We might place top three at state if we can do that."
Johnsrud took second in the 100 (11.4) and Rufenacht was third (11.4) . Schliem finished second in the 200 (23.2) and third in the long jump (19-6).
"I'm very pleased," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said of Johnsrud and Rufenacht in the 100. "It's good to see the guys so close to each other and pushing each other. It's also good to see kids with fresh legs going into conference."
