MONROE - Sugar River sophomore Vanessa Narveson understands the Raiders' game of speed begins with pinpoint, quick passes.

Narveson scored two goals to power Sugar River to a 5-1 win over Monroe Tuesday at Honey Creek Park. Sugar River (6-0, 1-0 Capitol Conference) scored four goals with the wind at their back in the second half.

"I feel like we just need to keep passing and then we can use our speed," Narveson said. "I felt like we just needed to keep going."

The Raiders entered the game having outscored opponents 33-0. Monroe (2-2) snapped the Raiders' streak of five straight shutouts.

"It's always great competition with Sugar River," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "They are a great team. They are fast, strong and physical. We knew coming in that they had scored 33 goals and not given up a goal. It was a good achievement to score the first goal on them."

Early on, the Cheesemakers and Raiders were locked in a defensive battle in the first half. Monroe sophomore Maddie Kallgren just missed a goal shooting wide left of the near post in the third minute. Sugar River junior Hannah Donlin punched in a goal as Monroe junior goalkeeper Gewndolyn Ambrose came out to attack the ball. The Cheesemakers trailed just 1-0 in the first half, but couldn't cash in on several shots with the wind.

"I felt like we played out of control the first 10 or 20 minutes," Sugar River coach John Ziperski said. "We didn't play our game in the first half. We had to adjust to their style of soccer. They were having longer possessions and touches than we are used to."

Monroe junior defender Jenna Crook injured her ankle more than halfway through the first half and didn't return.

"I think that was unfortunate," O'Neill said. "We don't have a lot of depth."

Narveson scored her first goal in the second half on a pass from sophomore Shannon Rabotski at 41 minutes, 17 seconds. Thirty-seven seconds later, Narveson scored again with a shot to the far post on an assist from sophomore Taylor Legler to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. Sugar River sophomore Nicole Sanders added to the Raiders' lead scoring a goal on a corner kick.

"We had streaks in the second half where we played great and we had streaks where we were a mess and looked lost out there," Ziperski said. "We are a young team. We have to figure out how to deal with adversity."

Kallgren lofted a shot just over Sugar River goalkeeper Paige Natzke to cut the Raiders' lead to 4-1 at 68:18. It's the first goal the Raiders have allowed this season. One person gets the goal on the stat sheet, but really it's a team effort," Kallgren said. "It really takes everyone."

Natzke had 10 saves and Ambrose had seven saves for the Cheesemakers.

Sugar River junior Ja-ae Borth scored the final goal for the Raiders. The Raiders out-shot the Cheesemakers 15-8.

"I think we should have came out with more intensity," Kallgren said.
