WHITEWATER - Monroe senior Eva Priewe's postseason run came to an end with a loss to Kenosha St. Joseph's junior Claire Czerwonka in a WIAA Division 2 Whitewater sectional Wednesday.

Czerwonka, the defending Division 2 state champion at No. 1 singles, defeated Priewe 6-0, 6-0. It's the second straight year Priewe qualified for the sectional. Czerwonka went on to win the sectional championship.

"We knew it would be a tough match for Eva," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We treated it like any other match against a state qualifier."

Saugstad said Czerwonka was by far the best player Priewe has played this season.

"She (Czerwonka) hit the ball hard, had huge serves and hit a lot of winners," Saugstad said. "Eva played hard and worked hard. She was in a bunch of points. Her opponent was just so tough. I don't know if I have ever seen competition this high at No. 1 singles."

Priewe finished the season 8-10. Seven of her 120 losses came to state qualifiers.

"She's had a very strong season," Saugstad said of Priewe. "To me for her to be the only one on the team to make it to sectionals the last two years shows how hard she has worked. She earned her two trips to sectionals."

Saugstad is confident Czerwonka will contend for a state title.

"It's hard to repeat as state champion," he said. "She will be one of the top seeds and favorites."
