WHITEWATER - Monroe senior Eva Priewe had to overcome a five-hour rain delay and the move of the WIAA Division 2 tennis subsectional, but she earned a trip to the sectional.

Priewe defeated Jefferson's Jazymne Schoeller 6-3, 6-3 to qualify for Wednesday's Division 2 Whitewater sectional. The subsectional Monday was originally scheduled for East Troy. However, after a five-hour rain delay, some of the subsectional matches were moved to Whitewater.

"It was a long day for the girls today," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "Eva showed a lot of hustle and was placing the ball pretty well. Eva had the longest wait on the team for a match and you never know how a player will respond to that long of a wait, but Eva played a solid match to advance to sectionals."

Priewe will play the No. 1 seed and defending state champion in the sectional Wednesday.

"Eva has played a lot of state qualifiers this season so hopefully she can take it one point at a time and hang with this girl," Saugstad said. "Eva has no pressure on her so hopefully she can play well."

Monroe senior Katie Demianiuk at No. 2 singles upset second-seeded Rachel Messer of Jefferson in the first round 6-1, 6-2. Messer was the Rock Valley Conference champion this year. East Troy's Vanessa Dingman then beat Demianiuk 6-1, 6-1.

"Katie played loose and was really ripping the ball well and moving her opponent around," Saugstad said.

At No. 3 singles, McFarland's Rebekah Severson defeated Monroe sophomore Ashley Placek in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Big Foot's Maddie Palmer, the No. 2 seed at No. 4 singles, beat Monroe's Skye Allen 6-1, 6-1. Palmer was Big Foot's No. 1 singles player last year, but is playing No. 4 singles this year after battling injuries.

"Skye had an unfortunate draw," Saugstad said. "The match doesn't indicate how competitive Skye was on many of the points. She did a good job against some tough competition."

Madison Edgewood's Maddie Molitor and Abby Fox at No. 1 doubles defeated Monroe sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Edgewood's Jojo Munns and Sarah Peterson defeated Monroe's Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotski 6-0, 6-1.

"We got some unfortunate draws at No. 1 and 2 doubles with Edgewood," Saugstad said. "I always hope to avoid Edgewood because we know how good they are and we feel we can be competitive with many other teams. Edgewood is just on another level."

Edgerton's No. 3 doubles team, which entered the subsectional 22-5, outlasted Monroe seniors Maija Liimatainen and Morgan Quinn 6-2, 6-4.

"With moving the tournament to Whitewater, we had to play two locations which meant Maija and Morgan played this match without a coach because I was at the other site," Saugstad said. "I wish I would have been there to help out those two, but unfortunately that is the way it worked out."
