FREEPORT - The Monroe girls swimming team faced a challenge against the Freeport Pretzels and set nine personal record times, despite dropping the dual meet 127-42 on Saturday.

Monroe senior Rachel Root won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 16.72 seconds and finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.56).

"The Freeport team is always a tough team to swim against, but I feel swimming more challenging teams makes us a stronger team," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "The girls have to rise up to that higher level of competition which makes them stronger in the water down the road.

Moser said setting nine PRs shows the team is improving.

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Angie Beaver, Corlissa Robertson, Root and Anika Nelson took second with a time of 2:10.50. Robertson teamed with Haley Kaiser, Mackenzie Hesgard and Anna Meritt to take third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:07.18. The Cheesemakers' 400 freestyle relay team of Root, Nelson, Meritt and Beaver also took third with a time of 4:21.38.

Beaver finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:04.47) and Meritt took third in the 100 butterfly (1:31.74).

Monroe will have its home opener at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Monona Grove at the Green County YMCA.
