MONTICELLO - The Monticello boys basketball team used a big first quarter surge and a balanced offensive attack to beat Cambridge 54-45 in a non-conference game Saturday.

The Ponies raced out to a 14-2 first-quarter lead and carried a seven-point lead into halftime.

The Ponies had three players in double figures, including senior Brandon Holz with a team-high 16 points, junior Tyler Ritschard (15 points, including three 3-pointers) and Corey McGowan (10).

Despite shooting just 11-of-22 from the free throw line, Monticello (13-5, 9-1 Six Rivers East) was able to hang on for the victory.
