Ponies stay on top in Six Rivers

MONTICELLO - The Monticello volleyball team overcame a slow start against Albany in the first set to sweep the Comets on Thursday.

Albany (0-11, 0-4 Six Rivers East) led by 12 points in the first set before the Ponies stormed back. Monticello (3-1, 3-0) rallied to pull out a victory in the first set 25-22 and then rolled to 25-16, 25-11 wins in the final two sets to stay unbeaten in the conference.

"All of the credit goes to Albany in that first set," Monticello coach Scott Smice said. "They came out on a roll and had us on the ropes. They came out guns a blazing and really took it to us. It was our first conference match at home. I think they were a little nervous, but that is not an excuse."

Monticello junior Courtney Kammes had a team-high eight kills and eight aces. Senior teammate Jessie Garrison racked up 21 assists and a team-best nine aces. Senior Brie Graber posted seven kills and senior Chandler Hansen had a team-high 15 digs for the Ponies. Senior teammate Megan Lehr added 13 digs.

Albany sophomore Libby Beck had a team-best eight kills. Senior teammate Taylor Seffrood had 11 assists and three aces. Both senior Sayde McDermott had 11 digs and junior Kassi Huffman had 10 digs.



ARGYe 3, Black Hawk 0

SOUTH WAYNE - Argyle junior Ashley Bruehlman had 13 kills and 11 aces to lead the Orioles to a three-set sweep over Black Hawk on Thursday.

Argyle sophomore Jena Saalsaa delivered 11 kills to help the Orioles upend the Warriors 26-24, 25-13, 25-15. With the win, Argyle improves to 4-1, 3-0 Six Rivers East.

Argyle senior Kayla Butler-Paulson had 21 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Bruehlman posted 10 digs and had two blocks. Sophomore teammate Jadyn Saalsaa also added 10 digs.

For Black Hawk, senior Sammy Lovelace had a team-best six kills. Freshman Maddy Huschitt had eight assists and senior Jordyn Delzer had two aces. Senior teammate Elizabeth Holland added three blocks.



Brodhead 3, Clinton 0

BRODHEAD - The Brodhead volleyball team swept Rock Valley South Conference rival Clinton in three sets on Thursday.

Brodhead sophomore Abbey Johnson had five kills, 17 assists and seven digs to lead the Cardinals to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-13 win over the Cougars.

Brodhead's Katie Goecks had a team-high seven kills. Junior Chandra Clark posted four aces and eight assists. Alexis Oliver had six digs.
