ARGYLE - Monticello all but wrapped up the Six Rivers East Conference title with another epic five-game win over Argyle, this time winning 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 6-25, 15-13.
"In the first meeting, both teams were sloppy and neither really deserved to win," Argyle head coach Shane Johnson said, recalling the Ponies' five-set win back on Sept. 1. "This one was a really well played match. Both teams played really well and deserved to win. It's a tough loss to swallow."
After getting behind 2-0 in the match, the Orioles turned everything around. Following a strong showing from the service line by Micala Peterson, Cortney Gilbertson and Danielle Treuthardt, Argyle (6-2) dominated the third and fourth games. Treuthardt had five aces in a seven-point run and Peterson led all players with nine aces in the match.
"Everything went right. We executed well," Johnson said. "Cortney Gilbertson took us from 14-4 to 22-4 at one point. Abby Flanagan had three kills in that stretch for us. Everyone played perfectly."
Peterson also had 13 kills and 30 digs, while Treuthardt added four blocks. Setter Kayla Ostby logged 33 assists.
However, it was the Ponies (8-0) that finished the match on top.
"It's disappointing," said Johnson, whose team is in position to win second-place in the conference.
Marissa Berg led Monticello with 11 kills, C.J. Dilley dished out 18 assists and Desiree Marty added three aces. Amy Silver had seven blocks and Claire Gietzel notched nine digs.
The Ponies get back into action next Tuesday at Black Hawk, while Argyle hosts Pecatonica this Thursday.
