MONTICELLO - Sophomore Jon Errthum had 26 points and 19 rebounds to help the Monticello High School boys basketball team break a losing streak at 34 games with a 73-37 nonconference victory over Madison Country Day.

It was the Ponies' first win since Thanksgiving 2014 when they defeated New Glarus.

"We finally got over that hump," Monticello coach Mark Olson said. "You could see the confidence swell and the boys say, 'Hey, we can actually do this.' After that the rest of the game came much easier for us."

Errthum scored 12 points in the first half to help the Ponies (1-13) build a 28-18 advantage, and then senior Logan Marty scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half when Monticello outscored Country Day 45-19.

"We played better, more sound defense in the second half, and offensively we were more patient and worked to get better shots," Olson said. "Once we made a few, we saw a few more go in."

Junior Zach Price added 10 points, including one 3-pointer, for Monticello. Marty hit three 3-pointers.
