MONTICELLO - Senior Alyssah Kubly has played basketball with some of her teammates since elementary school. It comes as no surprise to Monticello coach Lori Brokopp the success Kubly has had on the hardwood.

Kubly scored a game-high 20 points Friday to help Monticello cruise to a 52-34 win over Juda. With her performance, Kubly eclipsed the 1,000-career-point milestone. She entered the game needing just eight points to reach the 1,000-point mark.

"She's deserving of this," Brokopp said. "She works really hard. She has had a great career at Monticello for 3 1/2 years. It was definitely a personal goal of hers. I know she couldn't have done it without those other five seniors."

It wasn't all clear sailing for Monticello (10-6, 6-2 Six Rivers East) in the first quarter. Juda (6-11, 2-7) jumped out to a 10-9 lead. The Ponies switched to a halfcourt press in the second quarter to spark an 18-11 run. Juda sophomore Chelsea Burkhalter scored 11 points and drilled three 3-pointers in the first half to keep the Panthers within six points at the break.

"We have to give her (Burkhalter) a lot of credit," Brokopp said. "We had a hand up on her and she was way out there. She is very patient."

Monticello senior Samantha DeVoe scored 18 points and senior teammate Courtney Leuzinger added nine points. Juda's Jessica Crull led the Panthers with a team-high 15 points.

The Panthers trailed the Ponies by nine points to start the fourth quarter. Monticello sealed the game by outscoring the Panthers 15-6 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers played a zone most of the game, but switched to a man-to-man defense in the fourth quarter.

"In the third quarter we hadn't taken control and they were very monotonous with their passes," Brokopp said. "They (Monticello) kept their intensity and didn't fall back on their heels. We just did the little things better down the stretch."

Monticello will play at Barneveld Thursday.

"We are always excited and up to play Barneveld," Brokopp said. "There is no better way to get ready for the postseason than to challenge yourself against the No. 1-ranked team. Whatever happens on the scoreboard you can only get better. I see this as part of our process and postseason journey."
