MONTICELLO - The Monticello girls basketball team started off conference play on the right foot Thursday night by knocking off Juda, 38-20.
After the first quarter, the game was tied at 2. But Monticello pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 14-1 in the quarter to take a 16-3 lead into the half. Monticello coach Lori Brokopp said the key for the Ponies was their solid halfcourt defense.
"The girls were really good at helping recover, seeing the ball, and communicating," Brokopp said.
Sophomore Alyssah Kubly led Monticello with 15 points. Brokopp said the key for the Ponies on offense was getting into the lane against Juda's defense.
"They showed us a sagging man-to-man with a lot of switching," Brokopp said. "We ran our zone offense against it. We were able to penetrate, and we were able to get to the line. We made some shots in the middle."
Junior Tabatha Davis led the Panthers with eight points. Senior Jessica Rackow also added six for Juda.
Monticello improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Six Rivers East. Juda fell to 2-5 and 0-1 with the loss.
Barneveld 73, Black Hawk 28
SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk and Barneveld renewed their girls basketball rivalry Thursday night, with Barneveld coming out on top,73-28.
The two teams shared the Six Rivers East conference title last season before Barneveld beat the Warriors in the sectional semifinal. Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said that this year's Barneveld team is very skilled once again.
"They hit a ton of shots. That's what they've done every game I've seen them play," said Flanagan. "We struggled to make baskets. They're deep and they have a high skill set. They'll be tough for anyone to beat."
Black Hawk was led in scoring by Jen Wellnitz, who had 11 points. Hannah Whitish and Rachel Slaney led Barneveld with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Flanagan said that his team had a hard time stopping Barneveld's balanced scoring attack.
"We started out in a man, and then switched to a zone in the fourth quarter. But they're just that balanced ... We did a good job of taking away one kid, but we struggled with a couple others."
Black Hawk is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Six Rivers East conference.
"We're trying to figure out some answers," Flanagan said. "It's a long season, though."
