Ponies, Redbirds fall at home

MONTICELLO - The Ponies were having a troublesome time with conference leader Barneveld, but thanks to darkness, the second game of Friday's Six Rivers East doubleheader was suspended.

The Eagles were leading the Ponies 9-3 after four innings when the sun set, further postponing a game that had already been moved back from Thursday.

In the opener, Monticello kept close to Barneveld, but couldn't overcome five errors and eight walks and lost 16-9.

"If you want to beat teams like Barneveld, you can't do that," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said.

Barneveld scored two runs in both the first and third innings, but a solo home run by Lukas Kolasch kept the Ponies in it to that point. In fact, even after the Eagles scored four runs in the top of the fourth to make it 8-1, Monticello roared back with a six-run inning of its own.

"That's kind of what we've done all season - we make a good comeback, but then just run out of gas. We can never get over that hump and take the lead," Pinnow said.

The Eagles scored eight more runs through the final three innings to cap the win.

Kolasch started on the hill for the Ponies and allowed seven walks, five hits and eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Tyler Ritschard and Corey McGowan pitched in relief.

McGowan was 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs and Ritschard added a double.

Cuba City 7, Darlington 5

DARLINGTON - The Cubans scored all seven of their runs in the second and third innings, and the Redbirds could never catch back up.

Darlington scored two runs in the bottom of the first to hold it's only lead of the contest.

Tyler Black allowed nine hits and four walks in seven innings for the Redbirds.

Black and Colton Hackett each collected two hits at the plate for Darlington.
