MONTICELLO - The Monticello volleyball team started fast Tuesday against Black Hawk and didn't look back, winning at home in three sets, 25-9, 25-14, 25-16.

Monticello (11-2, 7-0 Six Rivers East) senior Alyssah Kubly led the Ponies in kills with 11, followed by senior Brecklyn Klosterman with four. Monticello senior Jordan Garrison notched 20 assists. The Ponies had 10 aces as a team, led by Kubly with four and senior Mackenzie Zanow with three. The team had four blocks.

Black Hawk sophomore Sam Lovelace led the Warriors with three aces, and junior Brooke Moore tallied nine assists.

Monticello coach Scott Smice said the team started strong, thanks in part to the school's Breast Cancer Awareness Night.

"That was extra incentive for our kids," Smice said of the awareness event. "I was real happy with how we started. I'd say we took control early and carried that momentum through the second and third games."

Monticello will host Juda on "Parents and Senior Night" at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Argyle 3, Juda 2

JUDA - The Juda volleyball team went toe to toe with Argyle Tuesday in a Six Rivers East showdown, but the Orioles pulled out the win in five sets.

The Orioles outlasted the Panthers in the first set to win 25-23. Juda (10-8, 3-5 Six Rivers East) rallied to win the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-12, but Argyle closed out the game in the fourth and final sets, 25-14, 15-10.

"Not getting that first game was tough for us," Juda coach Scott Anderson said. "That momentum really swung. The first one was a squeaker."

Argyle was led by senior Jenna Langmeier, who had nine kills and a whopping 41 digs.

"She was an animal in the back for them," Anderson said of Langmeier.

Argyle sophomore Kayla-Butler Paulson had 25 assists, and the Orioles had three aces as a team.

Juda was led by senior Cheyenne Ambler with nine kills and sophomore Alexis Goecks with seven kills. Sophomore Chelsea Burkhalter led the Panthers with 23 digs.

"I thought my girls played extremely well," Anderson said. "We dug a lot, we serve-received a lot. But unfortunately Argyle was a lot better.

"This was a big step for us. We played with one of the top teams in the conference tonight."

Juda will play Monticello at 7 p.m. Thursday.
